Blackie, now Jackie!
Blackie was once loved by an elderly woman who was bedridden. Her grandson
abused Blackie and kicked him - injuring Blackie so much that several discs on
his back had to be fused together. Due to the injury, he was often startled if
bumped or grabbed from behind. When the woman passed away, she asked the
caretaker to care for Blackie - who he loved. Sadly, the caretaker was no longer
able to care for him and he was given to another person who was kept him in her
closet or car (she was not allowed to have dogs in her apartment) until the
apartment manager found out and made her give the dog back. A friend of the
caretaker took Blackie home, but because she had grandchildren stay with her at
night, he often spent the night in the garage. She wanted him to have a better life
and started contacting rescue groups, most who declined help. We stepped in to
give Blackie a new start. Blackie's name was changed to Jackie by his foster
mom as it seemed a better fit. One day a nice man saw the flyer for Jackie. His
wife of the same name had recently passed away. Feeling a special connection,
he contacted us and took Jackie into his home. These days you can find Jackie
and his new Dad going for walks in the parks above the ocean or for car rides on
errands. Jackie got a new name, a new Dad and a new life. We wish Jackie and
his Dad a life of health and happiness.
Shadow is an 8 year old boy who found himself looking for a fresh start at life.
Abandoned by his first owner and forced to live in a backyard by his second owner,
he was dumped at the shelter four months later. While there, he was attacked by
another dog and suffered injury to his left paw. Sadly, Shadow was passed over by
the public and rescue groups. We rescued Shadow and gave him the fresh start he
needed. Even with a tough beginning, he was such a sweet boy who was
desperate for security and love. Shadow's favorite thing is to have his belly rubbed
and will roll over in front of you for that extra rub. He loves to go for walks or lay in
the sun. Shadow found his dream home in Palos Verdes with a loving family and a
beautiful yard to play in. We wish Shadow a lifetime of happiness and love. We
know he will never be abandoned again.
Hank was dumped for a younger man. At 8 years old (56 in human
years) his owner decided her new boyfriend was more important
than Hank and she dumped him at the shelter. Heartbroken, he
waited for her to come back but she never did. He went to live with
another family only to be dumped again at the shelter on the Fourth
of July. Thankfully, we got him out just in time. We don't understand
how anyone could give up this sweet gentle boy. He now lives with
his new mom who is a senior herself in a beautiful home with a
large back yard. Hank loves to lay in the sun and run in and out of
the doggie door. Hank's new mom is so fond of his speckeled belly
and sweet face that she can't comprehend anyone not loving him.
We are so happy for Hank to have a loving mom who would never
give him up!
Buster and Bandit
Buster and Bandit spent their entire lives living in a dirt backyard
and sleeping in a dog house. They were breeding dogs and one
day Bandit at six years old said she had enough- and would no
longer let Buster near her. The owner knew they deserved to
retire from breeding and contacted us to help them find a home.
Along came two wonderful men who lived in a beautiful house
with a big grassy back yard. They adopted Buster and Bandit
and are teaching them how to be house dogs and sleep in a
human bed. Buster and Bandit will never have puppies again
and will run free in and out of the house. We cannot thank their
new owners enough for giving Buster and Bandit a slice of
heaven in their new lives.
Can you help support more successful adoptions? More and more
wonderful dogs are being abandoned by their owners, especially the
elderly, ill, or abused. Help us find them the new loving forever
homes they deserve!
Oreo was boarded at a local veterinarian's office in October 2007 - a year later
he was still waiting to be picked up and his owner refused to come get him. He
spent a year of his life in a cage wondering what happened to him. He was taken
out several times a day for short walks and received attention from the clinic's
staff, but he wondered why no one came to take him home. He lost weight and
his muscles atrophied. He was scared at night with all the noises. He didn't want
to live in a cage his entire life.
In October 2008 the clinic asked the Dexter Foundation for help in finding Oreo a
home. Several nice people fostered Oreo trying to help him build up his strength.
He learned to enjoy the good life outside socializing with other people and smaller
animals. Oreo didn't seem to care for bigger dogs that he met on his outings.
Then one day a nice woman named Penny came along to foster him for the
holidays. Well it was LOVE LOVE LOVE for Oreo and Penny.
They live happily at the beach, not far from the vet's office where he spent that long
year. Thankfully he will only have to go by there for visits but never have to spend
another night in a cage thanks to Penny. We appreciate all the help Ricarda,
Julie, Norman, Ashley and Penny gave Oreo in providing him a safe place to stay
while searching for the perfect home. We are so happy for Oreo and his happy
home with Penny!
Sweet Lexi was found abandoned in the rural areas of Fresno. Injured
and in pain, she was held at a holding facility for five days without
medical treatment until an owner could be found. Sadly, no one ever
came. She was then transported off to the county facility to be
euthanized. Animal Rescue Friends of Fresno saw Lexi and pulled her
immediately. They contacted The Dexter Foundation and asked us if we
could help her. Of course we said yes. Lexi was taken to our
ophthalmologist in Culver City and underwent surgery to remove her
injured blind left eye. Sadly, her vision was also impaired in her right
eye and she is mostly blind but Lexi does very well getting around and
mapping out her home.
Right before Christmas a wonderful young couple contacted The Dexter
Foundation. They recently got married and wanted to start their new life
together by bringing Lexi into their family. Due to a family member
having the same name, they changed Lexi's name to Sami, and she took
to it right away. Sami also has a feline sister that she shares with her
new parents and they all get along. Sami loves to go for walks and has
made many new friends in the neighborhood. We are so happy for
Sami and her new family. We want to thank everyone who contributed
to her care.
Beautiful Bella found the perfect home with Dawn. Bella took to Dawn right
from the start, and the two have been inseparable ever since. Bella now has
an enormous yard to run in, and a new loving family to care for her. She is
now the center of attention, the way she deserves to be. Bella spends her
days playing in the yard or napping in the sun.
We want to thank all of our volunteers for making this perfect match possible!
Max and Charlie
Max and Charlie were rescued from the an overcrowded
shelter. They are brothers that have been together their
whole lives. We wanted to find the perfect home so these
playful young boys could stay together. We finally did!
They are now part of a family that includes two boys and
a girl. Just the perfect combination for these happy,
energetic young dogs. Max and Charlie go on long
walks every day, and play in the yard with the children
every chance they get. They are in heaven!
Flynn is a happy, playful puppy! He found his way into the
animal shelter and waited for someone to come claim him.
When no one did, a volunteer called us to save him on his
last day. We knew we could find this cute little boy a loving
forever home! He's now in a home with 3 brothers to play
with all day! He couldn't be happier! It's every little boy's
Chloe is a happy, healthy 4 year old Boston Terrier mix
who was rescued from the Kern County Animal shelter on
her "last day." She had been found wandering the streets.
She had just recently had puppies, so perhaps she went
out looking for food.
We rescued her, got her a thourogh vet checkup, had her
spayed, microchipped and brought her up to date on all of
Chloe has a smile that could light up a room! She is an
absolute joy to have in the house. She is very loving and
devoted, despite her rough start in life. She has now found
a wonderful family who love her very much. Chloe is so
smart, she's already learned all of the house rules.
Sweet Lily is a young Boston Terrier Mix who's time had run out at
the Downey Animal Shelter. She had a bad case of kennel cough,
but we fixed her up, got her up to date on all of her shots, and had
her microchipped. When her foster mom was taking her for a walk,
a wonderful family met her, and instantly fell in love with her! Her
happy, playful disposition, and wonderful smile melted their
hearts. She now has the wonderful loving forever home she
Charlie was rescued from the Moreno Valley Shelter.
No one came to claim him, and his time had finally
run out. Without dedicated rescue organizations
like purebreds, mixed breed dogs are the most
vulnerable. He is a young Boston terrier mixed
puppy. He is playful, loves other dogs, and is very
curious about cats! He is quite the character. He
loves to sit on a chair beside you, like a human,
while you have your morning coffee! A wonderful
family saw Charlie's cute picture, and just had to
meet him! He is now a loved member of their family.
He spends his days playing, and cuddling with his
Butch and Cassidy...
Butch and Cassidy were found wandering the streets. A
neighbor knew their family had moved away, leaving
them behind. She called the Dexter Foundation for help.
After many attempts to find their family, we put them up
for adoption. These two happy boys had been together
their entire lives, and we wanted them to stay together.
A young couple knew that Butch and Cassidy were the
perfect addition to their family! They have a big yard to
play in, and lots of love and attention. Butch and
Cassidy have finally found the loving forever home
Louie is a wonderful 3 year old Boston boy found
wandering the streets of Chatsworth. He was
brought to the shelter, and when no one adopted
him, we saved him! We found him the absolute
perfect home! The most loving and attentive family,
with two other doggies to play with! Louie is
treated to homemade meals, and lots and lots of
love! We are so happy for Louie, and feel so lucky
we found such a wonderful family for him!
Scruffles is a 3 year old Tibetan Spaniel. His photo was
one of dozens of photos emailed to us each week of dogs
on their "last day." He had been at the shelter so long, that
it was his last chance at rescue. He was incorrectly listed
as a Pekingese mix, and in his photo, his head was down
as he cowered in the back of his cage. He looked so
scared, that we just had to save him! We were delighted
to find a happy, healthy Tibetan Spaniel. It just goes to
show you that you can't rely on shelter photos and
descriptions to look for adoptable dogs! Scruffles is now
living the good life with a wonderful family that adores him!
A backyard breeder contacted us about
Patches. She had been used as a cash
machine, and at the young age of 5, the
breeder no longer wanted her. He asked
us to find her a home, or he'd trade her
with another breeder so her misery
would start all over. We took her in
immediately, and now she is living a
happy, playful life! Her new family
adores her, and treats her like the
princess she was always meant to be.
Ginger is a wonderful German Shepherd mix who was adored by her family.
Unfortunately, due to job relocation, they had to move overseas. They were
heartbroken, but wanted to find Ginger the best possible home. They
contacted the Dexter Foundation for help. We posted her on a dozen
different dog adoption websites, and gave them lots of information on
how to screen potential adopters. They were able to find her a fantastic
home in just a few weeks!
Troy is a 5 year old Boston boy who came to us from a Northern California
shelter. He was not being shown to the public because they thought he was
unadoptable! He was pretty dirty, had several rotten teeth, and it was
obvious he was never cared for. We took him to our vet, had him cleaned
up, and found the most happy, curious little boy! He loves to roam through
the yard watching for invading squirrels or birds. He finally found a great
home with the love and care he deserves!
Bruno was dropped off at the shelter by his owners. They knew that if he wasn't
adopted within a few days, he would be euthanized, but they left him anyway. He is
at least 7 years old, is a little hard of hearing, has a touch of arthritis, chronic
bronchitis, and requires daily medication! We were willing to take care of him for
the rest of his life because we didn't think this wonderful little man would ever find a
home! We were wrong!! Bruno has two wonderful guardian angels named Don
and Brandon who saw his picture, and knew they had to have him! They have
given him the best home that any dog could want, and they take care of all of
his medical needs. They are truly amazing! Bruno loves them so much because
they realize that not everyone can be perfect.
Bo is a happy purebred Boston
terrier puppy! He was only 6
months old, but found his way
into the shelter. When no one
came to claim him, we rescued
him, and found him wonderful
home. His new family loves him
Molly is a healthy 2 year old terrier mix that we rescued from a shelter in
Central California on her "last day." The mixed breed dogs are most
vulnerable in the shelter. Without the dedicated rescue organizations that
purebreds have, many never make it out. It's very sad. We knew Molly was
a great dog, and deserved a family. She was staying in one of our foster
homes, and a neighbor fell in love with her! Molly now has the perfect home,
where she is loved, and will always be safe!
Bosco, now Sascha!
Bosco is energetic 6 month old Boston mix we rescued from the shelter.
Even though she is a happy, healthy puppy, no one came to adopt her.
We knew that we had to save her! She loves to play, and is extremely
smart! She has already learned a few commands and tricks! Her new
family couldn't be happier.
Can you help support more successful adoptions? More and
more wonderful dogs are being abandoned by their owners,
especially the elderly, ill, or abused. Help us find them the new
loving forever homes they deserve!
Shaggy is a 1 year
old terrier mix we

He had been

The previous owners
couldn't be reached,
and he was scheduled
to be put down
at the shelter! We
saved him just
in time! Now he has a
wonderful family that
will never abandon
Zoey is a year old Scottish terrier
we saved from the Carson shelter.
She was scared and hiding in the
back of her cage. Our volunteer
went to save another dog and
passed out treats to the rest of the
shelter dogs. Poor Zoey was so
frightened, her treats were always
stolen by the other dogs in the
cage. Our volunteer knew she had
to save her! Shaggy's new mom
thought Shaggy could use a
playmate, and when she saw
Zoey, she knew she had to have
her! Zoey and Shaggy are now so
happy spending their days together
Jake is a handsome 3 year old purebred Boston terrier. His
owners loved him very much, but lost their home to foreclosure,
and could not take him to the new apartment. They called and
asked us to find him a home. He now has a wonderful home with
a yard, and several kids to play with. Jake is so happy!
Kyle, now Isaac is an adorable Pug rescued from a shelter in Northern
California. He was very sick, and his left eye was badly injured. Several
rescues turned him down, knowing he would need expensive vet care to
save his life. We saw his sweet face, and knew we couldn't say no! Isaac
spent several weeks in the hospital to receive IV antibiotics for his
pneumonia, and needed expensive surgery for his left eye. Finally, Isaac
got better! He became the most loving, happy little boy! Isaac found a
wonderful home with Ian, and now they're best friends.
Piper is a playful 1 year old Boston girl. We saved her from a
shelter on her last day. As a young girl, she has a lot of energy to
burn, and we found her the perfect home! Evan loves to take
Piper on long walks, and play fetch. They're perfectly matched!
Piper couldn't be happier!
Blue and Stretch are two brothers who needed a home. We
were contacted by a wonderful woman who was trying to save
them from the shelter when their owner had to move out of state.
She contacted us for assistance. We posted them on several pet
adoption websites, and gave her advice on how to meet potential
adopters. Blue and Stretch were adopted within a week! They
have a new home, where they are truly loved!
Susie was adopted from a shelter in Kern County. She had been
at the shelter for several months waiting for someone to love! The
shelter workers loved her sweet personality, and couldn't allow the
unthinkable to happen, even though her time had run out. We
decided she had stayed in the shelter long enough. We found her
the perfect home. She gets to go with her mom to work everyday,
and she happily greets all the customers! Susie has the best life,
and is truly loved.
Rocky is a young pug who's family contacted us for assistance in
finding him a new home. Within days of posting him on the internet,
Rocky found a new home! The Dexter Foundation frequently helps
owners find new loving forever homes for the beloved family members!
Antonio is a young Brussels Griffon rescued from the Kern
County Animal shelter. He is a sweet, gentle little boy, who
found the perfect home! He now has two wonderful dads, and
a new sister named Olivia! Antonio and Olivia spend their
days playing together and going for walks around the
Jack is a 6 month old Boston terrier mix. We saved him from
the shelter, just as his time ran out. Jack's foster mom was
walking him around the neighborhood, when a woman noticed
how adorable he is! She decided to adopt Jack, and now he is
so happy living with his new family! His new dad's name is also
Jack, so now he's Jack Jr :)
Lola, pictured on the right, is a young Boston terrier mix we
rescued from a local shelter. She loved other dogs and people.
We found her a perfect home! She now lives with her new mom,
and her sister Sophie! Lola is a very happy girl!
Marley is a one year old Tibetan spaniel mix rescued from a
shelter in Central California. He is a happy, healthy playful little boy.
His foster dads were so impressed with his personality, that they
decided that they couldn't live without him, and had to adopt him!
Marley couldn't be happier!
Rudy is a young Boston terrier mix rescued from the Camarillo
shelter. When his time had run out, the shelter workers called us
to save him. We were able to find him a new home, where he will
always be safe and loved! Rudy has a new doggie brother, and
two cat sisters to play with. He loves to go to the dog park with his
new brother and make new friends! Rudy is very happy, and loves
his new family
Sissy is a beautiful purebred Boston terrier girl! She is
only 3 years old, but found her way into the shelter. When
no one came to claim her, we sent a volunteer to rescue
her! She started having seizures, but they were easily
controlled with daily medication. Our vet said she is
perfectly healthy, and will do just fine.
The family that adopted Flynn fostered Sissy while we
looked for a new home. Sissy and Flynn became so
bonded, they were inseparable! They played together,
napped together, and were always by each others side.
Happily, they decided to adopt Sissy so she and Flynn
could stay together!
Emma is two year old Boston girl we rescued from the Downey shelter.
She waited and waited for her family to come and claim her, but no one
ever came. We stepped in and saved her just in time. A wonderful family
saw her at her foster mom's house. They fell in love with her, and knew she
was the right dog to complete their family. Emma is so happy she has found
her forever home!
Sophie is a 2 year old Pug Pekingese mix we rescued
from the shelter. Our volunteer noticed her on the list of dogs
to be put down that day. Sophie looked so scared, our
volunteer knew she had to save her. We found a happy,
playful, healthy little girl! Staying in the shelter can be so
overwhelming that a dog's personality often doesn't shine
through. We found Sophie a wonderful home, where she
is truly loved.
Bella the Frenchie! We were contacted by a breeder who
had been using Bella as a cash machine. Bella finally had
enough, and decided she wanted to be the only dog! She
refused to let the other dogs near her! We saved her, and
found her a loving family. She loves to be around people,
loves affection, and loves living inside the house where she can
always be cuddly and warm!
Lily is a 5 year old purebred Boston Terrier who lived
her whole life with a family. After losing his job, then his
house, Lily's dad had to move in with relatives. The house
was just too crowded with other pets and people, that Lily
had to find a new place to live. Lily's dad was "devastated,"
and told us she is an "absolute treasure." He contacted us to
help her find the right home. We finally found the perfect
family! Lily has a new Boston brother named Brewno, that
she loves to play with. Lily is happy once again, and Lily's
dad is grateful that she is part of a loving family.
Roxie is one of the many seniors who find their way into the shelter. Many
people dump their loyal friend into the shelter when they feel they want a
puppy. Confused and sad, these dogs wait for their family to return for them.
But they never do. Roxie was going to be euthanized, even though she had
a lot of love to give. We knew that we had to save her! Roxie got a lot of
expensive vet care that she desperately needed. The vet felt she had been
neglected for a long time, and was not as well as she should have been. We
loved her and made her a part of our family. She spent her days lounging in
bed on nice soft blankets, and would always come running for treats. She
loved to cuddle, and was always wagging her tail. She was so happy! After
nearly a year in the same foster home, Roxie got suddenly ill. The vet said
that even though it was far too soon, her time had come. Roxie was
comfortable and peaceful when she passed away her foster mom's arms. She
knew she was truly loved.
Ted is a healthy purebred 3 year old Boston boy! We rescued him
from a shelter in Riverside county. He was gentle around people, but
did not like other dogs. We can only guess that something happened
in his past life to cause him to distrust other dogs. We got Ted to an
expert dog trainer who taught Ted to be part of the pack once again!
We found Ted the ideal home! Ted has a extremely large yard to run
and play in, and his new foster mom adores him! He is very devoted
to her, and cuddles with her every chance he gets.
Lucy and Teddy are one year old Brussels Griffon
mixes that were found wandering the streets of Bakersfield.
We were sent a list of dozens of dogs who's time had run
out and were going to be euthanized. Lucy and Teddy's
adorable photos were on that list, and we knew we could
find them a new forever home. We arranged a group of
volunteers to transport them to Los Angeles and found the
happiest well behaved little doggies. We were easily able
to find them their new forever homes! Thanks to our many
volunteers who assisted in their rescue! Without their help,
many healthy young dogs would be lost.
Maddi the Wonder Poodle, is a 4 year old purebred miniature
Poodle we rescued from a shelter in Central California on her last day. She
is a well behaved little girl, who just sat and waited to be saved. In the
overcrowded shelter system, even healthy young purebred dogs often
don't make it out. A wonderful woman looked for a companion, and found
exactly what she was looking for! She had many poodles in her lifetime,
and couldn't bear the thought of this little cutie without a home. When the
two met, it was love at first site! Maddi is now living the good life in Palos
Verdes! She will never be abandoned again!
Update! Maddi the Wonder Poodle is an extremely happy little girl! She
loves her parents Pat and Steve, who take excellent care of her. Maddi is
treated to long walks, loves to keep the yard clear of invaders and is
always up for a car ride or cuddle time! As you can see from Maddi's
glamour shot, she deserves all the love and attention that she gets!
Buddy is a young purebred Boston terrier abandoned at the Downey
shelter by his family. When he wasn't adopted, shelter workers asked if
we could save him. When we arrived at the shelter, we found an
emaciated injured little boy. He wasn't able to put weight on his right
front leg, so he hopped around everywhere. We immediately took him
to the vet for a thorough exam and xrays. She determined that he had
broken his leg years ago, and it never healed properly. The bones had
fused together improperly, and he would never be able to use that leg
again. That didn't get Buddy down. He was the happiest, most loving
dog you'd every hope to meet. He even played with all of the dogs in
his foster home. Buddy hopped around on 3 legs just to keep up with
the pack, always with a big smile on his face. We took Buddy to several
canine orthopedic specialists, and they all said the same thing... even
surgery could not help this little guy.
We found Buddy the perfect home! A wonderful woman with a big yard
saw his photo and heard his story. She knew she had to give him a
home! She adopted him immediately, and now Buddy has a loving
family with a doggie brother to call his own.
Benji is a 3 year old purebred Lhasa Apso rescued from
the Bakersfield shelter. He was scheduled to be euthanized
because a puppy in a cage near him had been sick, even
though he had all his vaccinations and was perfectly healthy
for over a month in quarantine. That just didn't seem fair to us,
so we had a volunteer drive up to get him. Benji is wonderful
happy, healthy little boy! A senior citizen had lost her Lhasa
years ago, and missed a doggie companion. When the two
met, we knew it was meant to be. The two spend their days
going on long walks and cuddling. Benji is so happy to have
a new home!
Fritz is a 3 year old Boston terrier purebred who
needed a new home. His owners contacted us when
they could no longer keep him. Fritz has the most
darling face, and loves to have lots of attention. A
wonderful couple saw his photo and now he's living
the good life!
Hercules! On the left is Hercules' shelter photo we received in an email of all the dogs that would be euthanized at
one shelter that week alone! He was under a year old, so we knew he deserved a chance. In his shelter photo, he was
so dirty and scared it was difficult to tell what breed he was. After several warm baths and lots of nutritious food, a
beautiful young Westie emerged! He's a healthy happy little boy! A fantastic young couple saw him and knew they had
to have him! They live by the beach, so he goes on several long walks a day to burn off all of his playful puppy energy!
It's so important not to rely on shelter photos alone when looking for a new or lost dog. Many beautiful dogs are so
frightened, scared and hungry, that their photos don't really depict who they are! A personal visit to the shelter or
adopting through a rescue is the best way to find the perfect addition to your family!
Stretch... we got a call from a volunteer from the
Carson shelter about a cute little dog with long legs! This
healthy mixed breed dog had waited to be saved from the
shelter, but no one ever came for her. Sadly, her time had
run out. We were able to rescue her just in time. A wonderful
family had been looking for a companion for their small dog,
and decided to adopt her! They named her Stretch because
she is the tallest small dog! Stretch is so happy to once
again be part of a family, only this time, she'll never be
abandoned at the shelter again.
Ellie is a beautiful healthy young Boston
terrier mix. She was saved from the Downey
shelter when her time had run out. Ellie has
the most delightful personality. Very loving
and playful, Ellie gets along well with
everyone. She has found the perfect home
with a fantastic family who love and adore

|Dedicated to Rescuing Dogs in the Southern California Area and Placing them in Loving Forever Homes
Bailey... we were contacted by the Las Vegas shelter about a
healthy 3 year old Boston terrier mix. She had been at the shelter for
months, and they could no longer keep her. After dozens of calls and
a lot of begging, we were able to arrange a group of volunteers to
drive her from Las Vegas to Los Angeles. She is a wonderful dog
with a loving happy personality. We found Bailey the perfect home!
She is now the center of attention in her new forever home! She'll
never be abandoned at the shelter again.
Duchess... A senior in San Luis Obispo called us about Duchess. A friend
had passed away leaving Duchess behind. She had spent her whole life with her
dad, and she was the center of his world. He treated her like royalty. This woman
was unable to care for Duchess, so we sent a volunteer up to retrieve her.
Although Duchess was only 9 yrs old, she was not in the best of health or spirits.
We took her to many vets and specialists who started her on medication.
Duchess was lavished with affection from her new foster mom, and had lots of
foster brothers and sisters to play with. Still Duchess seemed withdrawn. We
knew she missed her dad. After about 6 months, Duchess just one day refused
to take her medicine or even eat. We immediately took her to the vet for a
thorough check up. Every test was run, he gave her a few medicines by iv, and
said she would perk up on her own. The next day she still didn't improve, so we
took her back to the vet. Sadly, she died later that day, well before her time.
Duchess missed her dad so much, we know she wanted to be with him again.
Duchess and her dad are happy being together again across the Rainbow Bridge.
Riley and Gizmo! are two cell mates we rescued from the Kern
County animal shelter. Even though they are both only a year old, they
weren't going to make it out of the shelter. We arranged for several
volunteers to drive them down. We were delighted to find two adorable,
healthy young terrier mixes. They had become best friends, and loved
to play together! We found them the perfect home. A family with two
fantastic kids saw their pictures and wanted to adopt them! Riley and
Gizmo loved them at first sight! Riley and Gizmo couldn't be happier,
or more loved.
Molly is a 10 yr old Cocker Spaniel dumped at the shelter by her family. They
left her knowing that an older dog has very little chance of making it out alive. Molly
was so filthy, with matted fur, and black crusted ears. Molly was still the sweetest
dog you could ever hope to meet. The shelter volunteers called us and asked us to
save her when her time ran out. We took her to the vet, and she had a wonderful
spa day. She was so happy to be clean! We took Molly to one of our volunteers to
be treated to a loving home with soft cozy blankets to nap on. Her foster mom was
so impressed by her beautiful loving personality, that she had to adopt her! They
are so happy together! Of course, now we're looking for a new home to foster our
shelter rescues :)
Ramsey is a year old Golden/ Lab mix found wandering the
streets during the last heavy rainstorm. A wonderful man took
him in and tried to find his original owners. Unfortunately,
without an ID tag or microchip, that was nearly impossible.
This man contacted us, and we were able to post his photos
and description online. Ramsey was given a microchip so he'll
never be lost again! Within a few days, Ramsey was adopted
by a loving family!
Winston is a one year old Maltese/ Wheaten terrier mix. He was hit by a car
on New Year's Eve. Since he wasn't wearing an ID tag, he was brought to the
shelter. Unfortunately, Winston's front leg was broken. He waited at the Orange
County shelter for his owners to come rescue him, but no one ever did. This
little cutie with a broken leg wasn't going to make it out :( The shelter volunteers
started calling different rescues hoping someone would save him. Even though
all our foster homes are full, Winston is a wonderful dog, with a happy, playful
personality that we just couldn't say no. We found him the perfect home with a
yard to run in, and kids to play with. We're so lucky to have found such a fantastic
family that was happy to adopt Winston while his leg healed!
Scout the Bugg, a Boston/ Pug mix, is a fantastic 3 year old
dog rescued from the shelter on his last day. During the heavy
winter rains, fewer people make the trip out to the shelter and
more dogs are at risk. When Scout's time had run out, we sent
a volunteer to the shelter to save him. We found him a fantastic
home with several other doggie brothers to play with. Scout
couldn't be happier!
Nelson is a 17 pound poodle, about 5 years old, who had been neglected, abused and
abandoned, only to be saved by a compassionate shelter volunteer, who saw what a sweet
boy he was. We were contacted by volunteers when Nelson and a few other dogs had less
than n hour to live. So sad, but all too common. We took them all, even though we had no
space, and were short on funds to pay for boarding. Nelson was adopted by a family who
had the good fortune to share their home with Maddi, another Dexter Foundation "Success Story"
from two years earlier. All it took to bring out Nelson's warm and friendly personality was some
good, nourishing food, lots of affection and special love from a family who are delighted to have
found a place for him in their hearts. Nelson is one of our favorite rescues because of how far
he has come. This adorable boy has the best life because he finally found a family that loves
him! All of these wonderful dogs are alive today because of our extended Dexter Foundation family!
Thanks to all of our volunteers and donors who make this happen on a daily basis!
